I am currently doing an LLB at University College London (UCL).

Law at UCL

University College London, 2024-2027

Through my law degree, I have developed a comprehensive skill set that includes critical legal analysis, problem-solving, and effective communication. I have honed my ability to assess complex legal frameworks and apply legal principles to diverse issues, drawing on a strong foundation in statutory interpretation, case law analysis, and legal reasoning. My studies have enhanced my ability to construct well-reasoned arguments, both in writing and orally, and to present these arguments in a clear, persuasive manner.

Through case law analysis, I develop my ability to read and interpret judicial decisions, extracting legal principles and understanding how common law evolves. I engage with statutory provisions and secondary sources to assess how legislation interacts with case law. The module challenges me to apply contract law rules to factual scenarios, improving my legal reasoning and problem-solving skills. I also critically reflect on the theoretical foundations, principles, and policies underpinning contract law, questioning how rules function within their societal and comparative contexts.

Overall, my education has equipped me with the analytical, research, and communication skills necessary to navigate complex legal issues with confidence and precision.

Public Law

In this course, I developed the ability to describe and assess the workings of major UK governmental institutions and processes. I gained an understanding of how the UK system of government has evolved and diversified in recent times. I also learned to explain and evaluate key concepts such as sovereignty, democracy, constitutionalism, separation of powers, accountability, the rule of law, and human rights within the UK context. Additionally, I was able to identify and evaluate constitutional challenges related to the creation and use of primary legal sources of governmental power, including statutes, delegated legislation, prerogative powers, and, to a lesser extent, international treaties and European Union law.

Criminal Law

My study of the Criminal Law module provided me with a sophisticated understanding of the principal doctrines of criminal liability and their underlying theory, the ability to apply my knowledge and understanding to accurately analyse problems and to present reasoned argument on doubtful or controversial points; and the ability to discuss, in an informed, coherent and critical way, issues of criminal law doctrine.

Contract Law

In the Contract Law module, I study the fundamental principles governing agreements in private law, situating contract law within the broader law of obligations. I explore the purposes of contract law in society, including how it facilitates commerce, enforces promises, and balances fairness with certainty. I learn how contracts are formed through offer, acceptance, consideration, and intention to create legal relations, as well as how courts interpret contractual terms. I critically examine factors that may vitiate contracts, such as misrepresentation, undue influence, and duress, and analyse how the law controls unfair terms. I study the doctrine of frustration and how unforeseen circumstances may discharge contractual obligations. I also investigate contractual performance, breach, and the available remedies, including damages, specific performance, and restitution.

Property Law I

In the Property Law course, I gained a comprehensive understanding of fundamental property concepts. I explored legal estates and interests in land, focusing on the personal/proprietary rights distinction, the numerus clausus principle, and different types of legal estates. The course also covered equity, with a focus on equitable interests in land and the trust, and the formalities involved in creating and acquiring estates and interests in land. I examined the land registration system in England and Wales, including the issues arising when the system fails, and examined priority disputes under the Land Registration Act 2002. Further topics included co-ownership, trust of land, and the role of trustees in disputes between co-owners and third parties. I also explored constructive trust and proprietary estoppel as informal means of acquiring rights in land, and the differences between leases and licences. Additionally, I considered practical issues in multi-owned housing, such as commonhold and related reform proposals, and the creation and enforcement of easements and freehold covenants.

About

What skills, knowledge and talents set me apart?

  • My top three qualities are dedication, resilience, and honesty. I am highly driven.

  • I have completed A-levels in Computer Science, History, Economics, and Maths, which taught me to develop meaningful connections between different areas of knowledge. This has honed my problem-solving and critical thinking skills, enabling me to apply an interdisciplinary approach to complex issues. I draw on insights from various fields to find creative and innovative solutions, leveraging diverse frameworks and styles of reasoning.

  • Building on this foundation, my law degree further refined my ability to critically assess and apply complex legal principles. I have developed strong research skills, the capacity to reason analytically, and the ability to present well-structured arguments, whether independently or in collaboration with others. I direct my own learning with confidence, considering issues from multiple perspectives, and my studies have enhanced my ability to learn efficiently and immerse myself in new topics.

  • I am highly self-aware and adept at identifying and deconstructing biases, both within myself and others. This enables me to approach problems objectively, ensuring my decision-making is clear and informed. These qualities allow me to tackle challenges in a structured and insightful way, whether working independently or as part of a team.

Academic Background

A-levels in History, Maths, Economics, Computer Science at Greenhead College

I studied these subjects to gain a well-rounded education and a solid foundation in analytical and technological skills, developing my ability to reason in different styles.

History allowed me to explore the making of the modern world and develop critical thinking and writing abilities.

As part of my A-level studies, I undertook a Historical Investigation focused on the period of 1563 to 1647, a time when witch-hunts escalated dramatically across Western Europe. The central question I explored was, "To what extent was misogyny the key reason for the escalation of witch-hunts in Western Europe?" Through this investigation, I aimed to develop a nuanced understanding of the causes behind one of the most tragic phenomena in European history. By critically analysing primary and secondary sources, I concluded that misogyny played a more critical role in the intensification of these witch-hunts than other factors, such as legal developments, which I also examined.

Find out about the purpose and nature of this investigation on my Projects & Portfolio page.

Maths allowed me to hone my logical reasoning skills in a context largely abstracted from reality.

Economics offered insights into how markets operate and the factors influencing financial decisions, providing a comprehensive understanding of the national and global economics and commercial awareness.

Computer Science equipped me with the programming and computational skills necessary in today's digital age. Through completing the CS coursework project, I developed a software following industry standards for documentation and the process.

Through these subjects, I gained a diverse skill set, the ability to think both critically and analytically, and a deeper appreciation for how different disciplines intersect to shape our world, allowing me to approach my undergraduate law studies in an interdisciplinary and thus broader way, through integration of my other knowledge.

Independent Research: Contract Law and Feminism

I conducted this independent research project (in the form of an EPQ, at Greenhead College) to complement my undergraduate academic study of law and develop my project management skills and ability to analyse, synthesise and present complex information coherently. Final outcome was a paper on "To what extent does British contract law disadvantage women, the feminine and the private sphere?"

You can see my detailed reflections on my project here.
